Ett av Popponnys egna flaggskepp Stafettpinnen! är tillbaka. Härom veckan introducerade vi maratonintervjun genom att vara nyfikna på Malmöbaserade musikbloggen Prejka. De i sin tur lämnade över pinnen till galleri Loyal, som nyligen flyttat ner från Stockholm. Vi skickade iväg ett blygsamt mail till en av ägarna Amy Giunta som generöst delade med sig av sina teorier kring hur cyklandet skiljer sig de två städerna emellan, och varför hon helt enkelt “loves Malmö”.

Hi there Amy, gallerist at Loyal. You’ve got a question from the Malmö based music blog Prejka: Why do people look at you so funny in Stockholm?
‘Cause you don’t wear a bicycle helmet.

You are from N.Y., but speak a little bit of Swedish. Is it ok if we continue in Swedish, for the sake of our readers?

Du driver Galleri Loyal tillsammans med din kollega Martin Lilja. Vi är många som är nyfikna på ert galleri nere i mellersta hamnen. Berätta om hur ni har valt platsen?
När man är ute på Hullkajen det känns hemligt och special. I’ve always loved harbors and it’s cool to watch the stora lastbåt pull in right in front of där galleriet ska ligger. Man kan se Skeppsbron och Hotel Savoy rakt fram, Dockan till höger over vattnet och medan solen gå ner kan man se ut över Danmark.

En ivrig vän berättade att mellersta hamnen och Saltimporten håller på att bli stans nya hotspot. Hur länge dröjer det innan svartklubbsinitiativen och kaffebarerna dyker upp tror du, och gentrifieringen är ett faktum? Är avståndet ett hinder?
It is amazing to have a city that goes all the way out to the ocean. To me the water and the seascape and the horizon is what is so special with Malmö. Saltimporten/Hullkajen is sure to be the new stadsdel snart …och om nån tror det år långt bort, get out of Malmö for a little trip! You have been here too long? Hehe.

Ni började som ett galleri i Stockholm men flyttade ner till Malmö i somras. Hur resonerade ni? Vad hände i Stockholm?
Malmö has a chance of actually skipping the whole “corporate takeover destruction” phase and going straight into a “return to local homegrown and independent revitalization of downtown area” phase. I love that every corner store is still independent and has its own selection of stuff from whichever country the person who owns it is from. Just like in any city like London or NY. In Stockholm every corner store is 7-Eleven. Boring.

In Malmö I love that people don’t “pling” their bike bells at you when you are in their way, They just go around you, just like in a real city. In the name of “safety” Stockholm did too many traffic rules and för mycket gågata, bussfält and enkelriktning that disrupts the flow of the city. So now there is a really weird aggressive bummer mood in the city if you don’t follow the rules exactly or you are an invandrare and don’t know the rules (like me). Everybody is constantly telling each other off like a student kissing up to the teacher and telling on the bad kids. It drove me batty!  Malmö is rad but I have already noticed a change in the past year I have been here and it makes me a bit worried. I really hope Malmö doesn’t become like that. Anyways, “Gågata” just turns into “outdoor corporate shopping mall area”… eller? Better to have traffic move in the city to keep it real.

Vad har du och Martin för konstbakgrund? När uppstod tidningen Loyal Magazine?
När Martin bodde i London 1995-2000 han träffade fotograf Kristian Bengtsson och startade tidningen i maj 2000 med Marilyn Petridean (också från Martins band By Coastal Café) och Anna Norlander. Martin would come visit me in New York and we met artists like Misaki Kawai early in 2002 (when she used to sell her drawings on the street) and Taylor McKimens who was her sambo. Vi öppnade galleriet feb 2005 in Stockholm on Torsgatan with this whole network of artists we had become part of with Loyal magazine. Back in those days certain Stockholm people used to say “you can’t show international art in Sweden”. We were like what?

We don’t have formal art training. Everything we have learned has come from working and doing. We are humble servants of the art that we love. We go with our gut and I think we have proved to have good instincts.  For the whole time the gallery was in Sthlm, our day to day life was mostly in New York. To me the point of having a gallery and this kind of life is to be mobile and Malmö is a fantastic homebase and a great place to put on exhibitions. We will put on world class shows here! Hopefully you will all enjoy that!  It will be fun!

Ja, please, berätta om framtidsplanerna?
This winter we will be traveling to Providence and Virginia and to an octagon-shaped house in the woods in upstate New York to visit all the artists we’re showing at Loyal this spring and fall. Saltimporten should be ready for Loyal to open in March/April. First is a solo show with Ben Jones from Paper Rad. He’s going to show large paintings and videos and his own invention that is a combination of the 2.

Vilken konstnär är drömmen?
We are going to show a few dream artists in a group show this spring called Mutant Pop curated by Dearraindrop and Brandon Joyce. Wait and see! We are excited. Mutant Pop is also going to be our next Loyal book.

Men Amy, om stockholmare bryr sig om hjälmar, vad bryr sig malmöiterna om?
Oj oj oj.  Hmm. Malmö I love you. I have learned lots of new words since moving to Malmö. When we first got here I made a list: det ordnar sig, lokalodlat, trampbåt, lastbåt, knivskuren, hotade, smällare, syltar, avsugning, kvarters krog, tjuv, ljummet.

Nu är det er tur att lämna vidare Stafettpinnen. Vem/vad är ni nyfikna på och varför?
Peggy Noland, a fashion designer from Kansas City, Missouri! Her clothes creations make me feel funny in a good way. It is future fashion but not in the way I ever imagined it would be.

Dear Peggy. When you were a little kid, what kind of clothes did you wear? Which did you like best – Care Bears or Heathcliff?
